A Note From Miss Chantal: Gift of Music Class Reflection

Miss Chantal with the Stepping Stones Crew!

A Note From Miss Chantal
(and the C-Fund's Gift of Music Program)

This last Wednesday marked my final Gift of Music class for the season. It's always hard to say goodbye!

It was just as tough to part last year, and the year prior to that. Did you know that the Joyful Noise C-Fund has provided three seasons of music classes so far to under-served children in the Ottawa County area? It is important to us that we give the gift of musical fun and learning to families who might not otherwise be able to afford those types of valuable early childhood services!

Thanks to a grant from the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation and the Mary Anne Sherwood Families and Children Field of Interest Fund, we were able to offer another round of high-quality programming this year to kids in need.

Our first section of classes for 2015 were at Grand Haven's local Head Start. I taught 3 consecutive weeks to a.m. students, followed by 3 consecutive weeks to p.m. students. I gave away around 35 slide whistles and brochures, and we had tons of fun exploring instruments, singing, and moving our bodies to music! On my very last day, the kids presented me with a card full of quotes (and some super-duper hugs).

Next was a three week session with the children of Stepping Stones daycare in Holland, a childcare center that provides care for residents of the Holland Rescue Mission who are transient, homeless or in need of a safe place to stay.

The children were so wonderful to work with. They eagerly awaited each music week (as well as Miss Kelli's Nutrition Expedition goodies!), and were so thankful for their slide whistles and the time we spent together. I saw a few familiar faces this year and met some new friends, and I enjoyed every moment of our time together, singing, playing and learning about music! =)

Looking at their picture above reminds me of how hard it was to say goodbye for the year, and how valuable my time spent was. I am so blessed to be a part of this program, and to be supported through your generous donations to the C-Fund. I can't thank our supporters enough for covering the costs of facilitating the program--from instrument purchases, to staffing costs.

Are you interested in supporting next year's classes? We need your help! Every bit counts!

Make a tax deductible donation to our non-profit program today (donation information to your left) and help cover the cost of an instrument or learning materials for a special child who is waiting patiently for the Gift of Music to come to them!

Wishing You Well,

Miss Chantal

How Many Times Have I Told You? (Sound familiar?)

The Joyful Noise C-Fund is hosting a free parenting seminar on Tuesday, June 23rd from 5-6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary at First Presbyterian Church!

Lesa Rice, a certified Conscious Discipline coach, will be presenting an hour and a half of valuable information on how to communicate effectively with children, all while maintaining your own composure. No registration is necessary. This event is free to the community so feel free to bring a friend, or share on your Facebook page!

When we asked Lesa Rice to comment on why she found the Conscious Discipline method to be superior to other forms of behavior support, she said: “Because it teaches the adults how to teach the child to regain their composure and how to handle all those big emotions when they don't get what they want.” The program, which is focused on managing conflict with self-control, helps both children and adults understand their emotions and motivations behind behaviors. Who doesn't want to feel more calm while handling conflict?

For those who would like to arrive a little early, coffee and dessert will be served. Attendees are encouraged to gather at 4:30 p.m. in the First Presbyterian lounge to enjoy refreshments and prepare for the conference. The first 100 guests to arrive will also receive a free gift bag filled with Conscious Discipline materials and note-taking supplies!

Hope to see you there!

We brought the Gift of Music and Nutrition Expedition to Stepping Stones in Holland!

Miss Chantal heads to Stepping Stones Daycare for Gift of Music classes for the next three consecutive weeks!

STEPPING STONES IN HOLLAND, MI

The Joyful Noise C-Fund is so excited to be working again this year with Stepping Stones Daycare of Holland, Michigan! Stepping Stones is a very special school that provides daycare for homeless and transient children who are currently residing at Holland Rescue Mission's homeless shelter.

Here is a little bit more about Stepping Stones from their website:
"Stepping Stones Daycare provides childcare for residents with children. This area of ministry affords parents the assurance of knowing that their children are being well cared for while they actively seek employment or continue to work at their current job.Stepping Stones is more than a daycare, it is a program designed to ease the impact of homelessness on the lives of children residing at the Mission. This ministry provides after-school tutoring, Bible story time, playtime, and field trips. It is difficult for a child to understand why their family could not stay in their home any longer. It is our desire to make the Mission feel like home while it is necessary for their families to stay here. The Family Hope Ministry Center accommodates the needs of this ministry by allowing space for a nursery, two all-purpose rooms, and a youth activity room equipped with computers and games for the older children. The Stepping Stones Daycare represents stability not only for the children, but for the entire family. The staff at Holland Rescue Mission knows that many who enter our doors lack a good foundation for practical living. If we can provide a stable environment for these little ones, we can help build a foundation for their future."
Miss Kelli Brunette of Joyful Noise Christian Childcare's "Nutrition Expedition" program also prepared a wonderful lesson plan and fresh fruit and vegetable box for children to explore and eat. The lesson was based on Giuseppe Arcimboldo, a 16th century Italian artist who loved to create artistic portraits with fruits and vegetables! The children looked at some of his work and had fun recreating their very own fruit and vegetable portraits. They also tried some of the delicious items from the box--even the limes. =)

Miss Chantal, program coordinator and teacher for The Joyful Noise C-Fund's Gift of Music Class, brought lots of fun items for music class, including this butterfly wand! The children enjoyed singing songs about transportation and colors with the ukulele, and each child received a slide whistle and companion brochure to be used for next three weeks of class. The slide whistles are gifts to be kept by the children once classes have ended!

Check back with us soon--there is more in store for the C-Fund this summer, from continued music classes to parenting seminars!
